Bishop Banda’s Homilies, Sunday, 4th Week, Lent.

Bishop Banda’s Homilies, Sunday, 4th Week, Lent.

1. Nothing about our lives is an accident. Although God’s plan is the best possible path, it’s not always the easiest. We may have to climb a few mountains and walk through some dark valleys. If we listen attentively to His calling, we will discover the rewards of living according to His will. That’s why it’s important to be attentive to His voice and be ready and willing to follow His commands.

2. When we reject to follow His calling the consequences are dire and personal. An unwillingness to listen to the Lord affects not only ourselves but also our loved ones and our associates. The rejection of God’s call by the people of Israel led to their own destruction and eventually deportation into Babylon.

3. Yet, God is calling them, through a pagan instrument. He is calling them back to restoration. Through this gesture we realize that God has no partiality. He can use any means. God’s call is always a call of love to repentance and conversion. Out of His magnanimity, God wants to spare His people and His House. God wants us to be saved.

4. Our second reading reiterates this truth as it states: “God loves us with so much love and He was generous with His mercy, that when we were dead through our sins, He brought us to life through Jesus”. That is God’s love for mankind. In the gospel passage, Jesus says: “God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not be lost but may have eternal life”.

5. From the foregoing, God wishes us to realize that we are His work of love created in Christ Jesus, to live a life of vigilance in our responsibilities, honesty in our undertaking, truthful in our motives and upright in our hearts. This is the more reason He calls us back to Himself when we stray in order to be reconciled. The question remains: Will we respond to His call and to be reconciled with Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

6. There is also the call to serve. Will we be willing to respond to the call to share God’s love with others? There is equally the call to give. God so loved the world, and gave us His only Son, Jesus. Jesus is calling us now to share not only in His love but also to share His love with others in service. May our Lenten season bring about a heart of listening – that will prompt us to repent, convert and to serve others with love.
