FRANCISCANS ZAMBIA–MALAWI PROVINCE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF EVANGELIZATION

The Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Province of the Proto-Martyrs of Zambia and Malawi joyfully celebrated their Silver Jubilee at the Franciscan Centre in Ndola. The Thanksgiving Mass was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, Archbishop of Ndola, and concelebrated by several bishops and clergy from across the country, including Bishop George Lungu of Chipata, Bishop Clement Mulenga of Kabwe, Bishop Patrick Chisanga of Mansa, and Assistant Superior General for Africa, Bracio Orengo. Also in attendance was Rev. Fr. Francis Mukosa, Secretary General of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), representing the Bishops’ Conference. In his homily, Archbishop Phiri reflected on the charism of St. Francis of Assisi, urging the Friars not to forget their calling in this modern world. He reminded them to remain faithful to the Franciscan mission by going out to the poor and marginalized, bringing the Gospel to the lost. He cautioned them against distractions of money and comfort, calling for a life of sacrifice and service. The Archbishop also appealed to the lay faithful to support priests in their ministry and not become stumbling blocks to their vocation. After Mass, an award ceremony was held to honor Friars who clocked 25 years in ministry. Beautiful portrait paintings were presented to all past and current Minister Provincials, and a lively delegation from Malawi graced the celebration with song, dance, and a special gift presentation to the current Minister Provincial. During the speeches at the end of the celebration, Minister Provincial Friar Mathew Kasongo thanked all priests, friars, and collaborators for their commitment, hard work, and unity that have kept the province strong over the years. He encouraged everyone to continue working together in humility and service to God and His people. The event was a vibrant expression of gratitude, unity, and renewed missionary zeal.
