Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD at 40

Thousands of clergy, religious and lay faithful gathered at St. John’s Convent Grounds in Kitwe on Saturday, 19 September 2026, for the official celebration of the 40th priestly anniversary of Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD. The colourful celebration brought together faithful from across the Archdiocese of Ndola and beyond to honour the Archbishop and give thanks to God for four decades of priestly service. The celebration came a few days after the Archbishop marked the actual anniversary of his ordination with Holy Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King on 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The connection between the Cross and his priestly journey holds particular significance, especially in light of his episcopal motto, “Unity through the Cross.” In his homily, Archbishop Phiri reflected openly on his 40 years of priestly ministry, sharing some of the experiences and challenges he has encountered along the journey. He acknowledged his own weaknesses and failures, while giving glory to God for sustaining him throughout the years. The Archbishop emphasised that his journey has ultimately been made possible by Christ, who has carried him through the joys, struggles and challenges of four decades of service. Reflecting on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he encouraged the faithful to always look to the Cross of Christ, particularly in moments of difficulty. He reminded them that the Cross is not merely a symbol of suffering, but the source of Christian hope, victory and salvation. The Mass was celebrated in a joyful and colourful atmosphere, with beautiful singing from the choir, as well as vibrant performances by the Ba Buomba and Ba Stella groups, adding to the spirit of thanksgiving and celebration. The celebration concluded with a colourful cake-cutting ceremony, marking the milestone in a joyful atmosphere of fellowship and gratitude. The event was organised by Rev. Fr. Enock Kapambwe together with the Nazareth Lay Group, St. Anne Lay Group and Women’s League. The programme was moderated by Rev. Fr. Desire Mulenga. The 40th anniversary celebration served as a joyful thanksgiving for Archbishop Phiri’s four decades of priestly ministry and a reminder of his continued call to serve Christ and His people, guided by the Cross and his episcopal motto: “Unity through the Cross.”
