Ascension Feast at St. Mary Parish in Twatasha
On the Feast of the Ascension, His Grace Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri celebrated Mass at St. Mary the Assumption Parish in Twatasha, Kitwe, in what was a joyful and spiritually uplifting celebration. This marked the Archbishop’s first visit to the parish since his appointment to the Archdiocese of Ndola. He was warmly welcomed by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Isaac Kalafu, and a congregation that filled the church to capacity. The Feast of the Ascension, observed 40 days after Easter, commemorates Jesus Christ’s return to heaven after His resurrection. It marks the conclusion of His earthly ministry and the beginning of the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel to the world. It is also a reminder to believers that Christ has gone to prepare a place for them, calling them to live with heaven as their ultimate goal. During the Eucharistic celebration, 39 candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and 20 extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion were commissioned into service. The Mass was a vibrant expression of faith, marked by solemn prayer, praise, and celebration. In his homily, Archbishop Phiri posed a challenging question: “Jesus has ascended to prepare a place for us—do you have a place?” He emphasized that while Christians live in the world, their hearts must be focused on eternity with God. He warned against the dangers of living in hidden sin and appearing holy only on the outside, stressing that a genuine relationship with Jesus is what truly matters—not positions held or external religious activities. The celebration ended on a high note with joyful singing by Ba Buomba and energetic dancing and marching by the Stella and Saferi groups, leaving the faithful spiritually renewed and encouraged.
