ASH WEDNESDAY MASS
On 18th February 2026, Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The solemn celebration marked the beginning of the Lenten season and was highly attended, with the cathedral filled to capacity. The Vicar General and priests from the cathedral community were also in attendance. In his homily, the Archbishop called on the faithful to return to God genuinely, emphasizing that repentance should be sincere and not done with the intention of continuing in sin. He reminded the congregation that Lent is a sacred time of conversion, renewal, and deep spiritual reflection. Reflecting on the three pillars of Lent, he spoke about fasting, urging the faithful that what they abstain from should benefit others. He cautioned that simply saving what one does not eat for later is merely economizing, but true fasting involves sacrifice and sharing with those in need. On almsgiving, the Archbishop stressed that it should not be done to seek praise, recognition, or appreciation, but as a humble service to God. He further emphasized that acts of charity must never demean or humiliate the recipient, but instead uphold and restore the dignity of the human person. He also encouraged the faithful to deepen their prayer life during Lent by praying the Rosary and spending time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The Mass concluded in a spirit of solemn reflection as the faithful began their Lenten journey with ashes as a sign of repentance and commitment to renewal.
