Immaculate Conception parish opens new church.
The Catholic community of Immaculate Conception Parish in Luanshya celebrated a historic and joy-filled milestone with the official opening of their new church building. The event was presided over by His Grace, Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD, who was warmly welcomed by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Alexander Chimpusa, together with parishioners, priests, religious men and women, civic leaders, and many visitors who gathered in large numbers to witness the memorable occasion. The celebration began outside the new church, where the building committee formally handed over the keys to the Archbishop. This symbolic gesture was followed by the solemn opening of the church doors, marking the official beginning of the sacred celebration. The Mass then proceeded inside, where the Archbishop performed several important rites: the consecration of the altar, the blessing of the church building, the consecration of the tabernacle, and the blessing of the statue of Mother Mary. During his homily, Archbishop Phiri called for a conversion of heart, reminding the faithful that the true Church is the people, not the physical structure. He congratulated parishioners for their dedication, noting with admiration that most of the funds for the project were raised by the community themselves. The day concluded with a vibrant luncheon and festivities, including plays, poems by the Holy Childhood, and cultural dances—joyfully marking the birth of a new spiritual home for the parish community. Notably in attendance was Former Parish Priest- Rev. Fr. Matthews Mumba, who began the church building project. His return from Lusaka to witness its completion brought joy to many. The work he started was faithfully finished by Current Parish Priest -Rev. Fr. Alexander Chimpusa, showing unity and continuity in the Church. Together with the parishioners’ support, their combined efforts stood as a clear sign of collaboration, shared faith and vision.
