Pastoral Visit to St. Mary’s Parish, Mufulira
On 22nd February 2026, the Archbishop made a pastoral visit to St. Mary’s Parish, Kamuchanga, in Mufulira, as the Church marked the First Sunday of Lent. He was warmly received by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Moses Chileshe, together with a large and enthusiastic congregation. The church was filled to capacity, and the liturgy was enriched by two vibrant choirs whose uplifting and beautiful singing added to the solemnity of the celebration. In his homily, the Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri emphasized the call to genuine Christian conversion, especially during this sacred season of Lent. He warned against living a double life—professing faith outwardly while remaining unchanged inwardly. He cautioned the faithful not to condemn public sinners while ignoring their own hidden faults, noting that some may appear righteous simply because their sins have not been exposed. He called for authentic repentance rather than a superficial display of holiness meant to impress others. The Archbishop reminded the congregation that God cannot be deceived. While one might succeed in misleading fellow Christians or even priests, nothing is hidden from God. Reflecting on the Lenten reminder that “you are dust and to dust you shall return,” he urged the faithful to remember their mortality and to give God His rightful place in their lives. Just as death is certain for all, so too is judgment, when each person will give an account of how they lived. The solemn celebration concluded beautifully, leaving the faithful challenged to embrace true repentance and a sincere renewal of heart as they continue their Lenten journey.
