SVD Welcomed to Ndola Archdiocese.
On 15th February 2026, the Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Lewis Mutachila, on behalf of His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD, celebrated Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mpongwe, formerly an outstation of St. Anthony’s Mission. The occasion marked the official welcome and introduction of a new religious congregation, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD – Societas Verbi Divini), which will now take over the pastoral administration of the church. Fr. Mutachila was warmly received by Rev. Fr. Hendricks Konka, who had previously been in charge of the centre. The celebration was also graced by the presence of the Zambia Mission Superior of the SVD, Rev. Fr. Martin Kawana, and the Mission Treasurer, Br. Valentine Godwe, along with clergy, religious, and the lay faithful. During the Mass, the appointments made by the Archbishop were formally announced. Rev. Fr. Wycliff Ogega was appointed as the new Parish Priest, assisted by Rev. Fr. Gradwell Kobekob, as the SVD congregation officially assumed responsibility for the running of the church. The faithful welcomed the new priests with great joy and enthusiasm. The SVD missionaries, whose primary mission includes evangelization, education, healthcare, and pastoral care, were warmly embraced by the community. The Mass was colourful and vibrant, marked by joyful singing and a strong spirit of unity as the parish began a new chapter under the care of the Society of the Divine Word.
