Palm Sunday at St. Lawrence Parish, Mufulira

On Sunday, 13th April 2025, St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mufulira hosted a special Palm Sunday celebration, led by the Archbishop of the Ndola Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri. He was warmly received by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Mufwaya, and the faithful who gathered in large numbers to mark the beginning of Holy Week. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where crowds welcomed Him with palm branches and joyful praise. This event marks the beginning of the most sacred week in the Church’s calendar and prepares Christians to reflect on the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. The celebration began with a public procession through the streets of Mufulira. Parishioners waved palm branches and sang hymns, turning the town into a joyful yet solemn witness of faith. In his homily, Archbishop Phiri urged the faithful to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ suffering and death, which he described as a clear sign of God’s immense love for humanity. He challenged everyone to examine their lives and question if they are truly living in response to that love. He spoke about the dangers of money and power, noting that these often draw people away from God. He reminded the congregation that unlike those who crucified Jesus out of ignorance, Christians today know who Jesus is, yet many still reject Him by choosing worldly things. The Archbishop emphasized that death is inevitable and Christians must live as pilgrims on a journey to heaven. He called on the faithful to support one another spiritually and not be stumbling blocks to others. He also spoke out against corruption, child abuse, and other vices in society, encouraging everyone to be instruments of positive change. The celebration concluded with a renewed call to true repentance, love, and commitment to Christ as Holy Week begins.
