Cassock Investiture

Cassock Investiture

A joyful and solemn celebration took place today, 10th May 2025, at St. Patrick Parish in Mufulira as 11 seminarians from St. Benedict Major Seminary were invested with the cassock, marking an important step in their journey to the priesthood. The Mass was celebrated by Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD, Archbishop of Ndola, and was attended by priests, family members, friends, and members of the faithful. A cassock is a traditional ankle-length clerical robe worn by seminarians and priests. It symbolizes dedication to God, and its white color reflects the call to live a life of purity and holiness. The investiture of the cassock is a rite of passage, publicly expressing a seminarian’s deeper commitment to the Church and priestly formation. The Archbishop was welcomed by Rev. Fr. Brian Mutale, Seminary Rector, Rev. Fr. Evaristo Chisenga, Mufulira Dean and Parish Priest, and several other priests. During his homily, Archbishop Phiri reminded the seminarians that wearing the cassock is not the end but the beginning of their journey. He cautioned them that priesthood is demanding, requiring discipline, prayer, humility and perseverance. He specifically warned them to guard against the temptations of women, alcohol, and substance abuse, which have led many astray. He further emphasized that true holiness is a matter of the heart, not merely the clothes worn. He also warned those who deliberately tempt seminarians and priests into sin, saying judgment awaits them. The Archbishop encouraged the seminarians to remain zealous and faithful, allowing their love for God to grow. After the homily, the cassocks were blessed and the seminarians vested. The celebration ended joyfully with vibrant singing and cheers from proud families and parishioners.
