Chrism Mass and Priests Pilgrimage.
On April 9, 2025, the Archbishop of Ndola Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD, celebrated the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola. This special celebration was combined with the Jubilee Year of Hope Pilgrimage for priests, which began at the grotto and ended in the cathedral. The Chrism Mass is one of the most solemn liturgies in the Catholic Church, during which the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism are blessed for use throughout the year. Traditionally celebrated during Holy Week, it is also considered “the priest’s day”, a moment to honor their sacred calling. Priests from across the Copperbelt arrived in Ndola on Monday evening for a Study Day on Tuesday, leading into Wednesday’s pilgrimage and Chrism Mass. During the Mass, the priests had the opportunity to renew their priestly vows, publicly recommitting themselves to their mission of service to God and His people. In his homily, Archbishop Phiri made a heartfelt appeal to the lay faithful, urging them to support their priests in living holy lives. He encouraged them to pray for their priests, and offer both spiritual and material support. He reminded the congregation that priests, though consecrated, are human beings and their lifestyle is not natural but a divine calling. The Archbishop warned against those who become accomplices in a priest’s wrongdoing and later condemn them when they fall. He stressed that priests are not ordinary men but are set apart for God, and must be treated with respect and care, regardless of their circumstances. The celebration concluded in a spirit of gratitude and reverence. Happy Priest Day!
