Vigil Mass for late Pope Francis.

Vigil Mass for late Pope Francis.

Today, the Archdiocese of Ndola joined the universal Church in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who will be laid to rest tomorrow in Rome. In heartfelt remembrance, Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD, led a Vigil Mass in honour of the late Pontiff, celebrated across the Archdiocese. During his homily, the Archbishop spoke passionately and emotionally about Pope Francis’ life, legacy, and personal impact. Reflecting on his own interactions with the late Pope, Archbishop Phiri described him as a man of deep humility, simplicity, and great love for humanity. He shared touching moments of how the Pope refused to be honoured with traditional gestures such as kissing his ring or kneeling before him, saying “he did not want to be worshipped, he was a simple man.” Archbishop Phiri highlighted Pope Francis’ enduring compassion for the poor and marginalized, always striving to live his life from the perspective of the disadvantaged. He called him a shepherd who walked closely with his flock and reminded the faithful that the papal office carries immense weight and responsibility—often misunderstood and easily judged by those who do not fully grasp its burden. He urged the congregation to pray for one another and to live in solidarity, avoiding judgment and instead offering support and understanding. He encouraged the faithful to make a positive impact in their communities by offering solutions and help to those in need. The Mass ended with prayers of thanksgiving for the life of Pope Francis .
