The Congregation of the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was founded in Spain by St. Dominic Guzman. Confirmed by Pope Honorius III in 1216. The aim of the Order of Preachers was to win back souls lost to the heresies of the time by preaching the truth. As such, Veritas became the motto for the preaching order, with itinerancy as a lifestyle so as to reach people in different parts of the world.

The first three Sisters Claver Elkel, Bernadette Bichler and Hyacinth Ehrensperger arrived in Zambia on 27th October 1924, planting the first roots at Kasisi Mission in Lusaka. They have spread all over the country. From a beginning with three Sisters, they are currently eighty-five Sisters serving in five dioceses of the country.

The Congregation has been supporting the work of the Church, establishing institutions of learning, hospitals, care facilities for vulnerable children and adults, youth ministry as well as pastoral work.
Today’s celebration is not just a celebration of accomplishments for the sister but a celebration of thanksgiving for the sacrifices of many and God’s providence.
